3 Fruits Rule

Fruits are important for every human body, each fruit has vitamins and minerals that need to be consumed by everyone and especially from young players. They provide not only the important VITAMINS and MINERALS for the body, they provide also ENERGY with a good daily consume on vegetables too.

The 3 Fruits Rule is necessary for every young player. It can be an APPLE for BREAKFAST , an ORANGE before LUNCH and a BANANA the the END of your practice. if you don’t have Practice you can eat it maybe late at evening BEFORE DINNER.

Of course you can change the 3 fruits any time you want. It doesn’t matter what fruit you eat but make sure you have always 1 in your bag and stay with the 3 Fruits Rule.

STUDY THE GAME

If you think about how many times have your coaches said „HEAD UP AND DON’T LOOK AT THE BALL“ I’m pretty sure that you can not event count them. OFFENCE is a part of the game that you have to see what the defenders are doing so you can take the right decision.

This is why you have to look always at the defense and your teammates. For example if a defender is not guarding your teammate right you can „read“ it and pass him so he can score. Or if you are a point guard you have to check what kind of defense the other team plays so you can run the right Offensive play.

It is important for you even if you work out with the team or alone to keep your head up and imagine that you are in a real game so you can STUDY THE DEFENSE and take the right option.

The Importance of the FOOTWORK

Before you read this article please think about this question below:

„Do you know where and when do we use FOOTWORK in Basketball? “

Let me help you. We use the FOOTWORK everywhere in Basketball, in PASSING , SHOOTING DRIBBLING, DEFENSE , REBOUNDS , FASTBREAKS, EVERYWHERE.

-For Passing it helps you to make a good and strong Pass by using your legs and your body at the same time.

-For Shooting in helps you create space and get ready for a good jump shoot.

-In Dribbling in helps to beat your man and be quick to react fast.

-For Defense it helps you to be quick and stay with your man

It is everywhere and that’s why all Coaches make sure their players are good at it. It is really important for young players to start from early ages and create their basis before they get used to the bad habits and the wrong footwork. It takes time to improve it but the advantage of it is of course big.

COOL DOWN STRETCHING

As I have mentioned before, a basketball player during the practice or a game , must stretch twice. One time for the warm up with a program of Dynamic Stretching and one time at the end for COOL DOWN STRETCHING.

At the end we need to COOL DOWN because it helps to bring the heart rate to its resting rate and we can achieve that with a short jog or walking but most common is the STRETCHING. Also the COOL DOWN helps to avoid the soar muscles after a high intensity practice.

STUDIES have proved that players who COOL DOWN at the end of every practice have less injuries.

A good COOL DOWN PROGRAM  would be to stretch at the end of your practice or game every muscle of your legs, the best would be to do the entire body and every single muscle but of course that would take really long time. So we focus more on the legs as they are the weapon for the basketball players. Every muscle should be stretched for 1 or 2 minutes at least but this time you need to lay down on the floor and let your blood come more to your heart. After stretching for 10 to 15 minutes on the floor, you can put your legs High for 5 minutes on the wall so the blood can move faster to your heart, that helps the rate of your heart to come back on it’s resting rate and rest your legs. After the 10 – 15 minutes for stretching and the 5 minutes with legs high it would be also great to have a 3 – 5 minutes slow walking without shoes.

I know it might be boring for most of you and you think that you have something more important to do but what is more important of being healthy , rest better and AVOID INJURIES. At the end of the day, you will be the one who will keep practicing and playing in the games.

THINK ABOUT IT !!!

3 Tips for a good Pass

We all know that the game of Basketball couldn’t be played without Passing. It is important for a player to be able to make a good pass at the right time and at the right place. Also it would be much helpful for a player to be able to make good passes with both hands Left and Right. 3 good Tips to improve you Passing skills  are:

1. Always have a follow through and send the ball exactly where your teammates want it.

2. Use your body and your legs for a stronger pass and also for fakes.

3.Make sure you give the ball to your teammates right to the spot that they have called for it so it is easier for them to do their move.

Read the Defense

Basketball is a Game that you need to take all the time DECISIONS on offence. To be successful you need to choose the BEST one of all the possible options that you have. On offence most of the young players think about a move or a decision before they have seen the set up of the defense and before they see the chances that will be successful with what they have though. To be simple, young players take decisions earlier than it is supposed to be and that ends to be the wrong ones because they didn’t READ THE DEFENSE. First of all, the understand of the defensive set up is important so you can decide which of the plays or moves would be best for.

Important is that you see the reaction of the defender and attack the right moment at the right place. Sometimes there is no possible option for you to attack the basket and that’s when you have to communicate with your teammates and find the miss-matches and the weakness of the defense.

TIP: Fakes helps a lot for taking a decision because they make the defense move and stay out of their position but still don’t over do it. There must be few but good and react at the BEST TIME AND PLACE

The Rebound

Its is not only important how high you jump to be a good Rebounder. A lot of players think that because of they can jump high they can take a lot of Rebounds. Of course it helps but to be a Great and Successful Rebounder in your Team there are 3 other things that you need to be good at.

1. The position of your body on the floor.  A big advantage to be successful is to be in front of your match up and be able to lock him with a good BOX OUT. Sometimes Professional Players don’t need to jump to take lots of rebounds because they had a „FIGHT“ before for the good position and a good BOX OUT.

2. The read of the shoot. You can understand where the ball is about to bounce after it hits the rim by keeping your eyes on the ball while its in the air. For example you can understand if the shoot is short or strong, maybe it goes left or right so you can already have the ADVANTAGE to be at the right place for the rebound first.

3. The Timing. Most of the players „Fight“ strong enough to take the good position to BOX OUT and Read the Shoot BUT they try to take the REBOUND too EARLY or too LATE. That ends to be a wrong decision and BAD Timing so they lose the „FIGHT“ and the opponent takes the BALL. Make sure that you also study the bounce of the ball after it hits the rim so you can be ready to receive it the HIGHEST possible before your match-up.

TIP: Sometimes you can be ready for the good position to receive the ball if you see from where your Teammate or the Offensive player take the jump shoot. For example if the shoot is taken from the left side of the court, most of the times it ends that the ball bounces to the right side. This is Proved from a Research about the GAME OF BASKETBALL.

Dynamic Stretching

I’m sure that everybody around the basketball family has heard many times the word STRETCH . Stretching for WARM-UP and stretching for COOL Down. Both of the times are really important as you can avoid injuries , protect your muscles and get ready for the Big Event.

Stretching for WARM-UP is no longer than 8-10 minutes. Most of the young players when it comes to WARM-UP stretching, sit down on the floor and start doing different exercises each one for longer than 20 seconds. THIS IS WRONG. Its still the warm up. The first 15 – 20 minutes Coaches have some drills for the players to get ready and make sure they have good feeling of their body and when they stretch and sit down in one position, they get COLD AGAIN.

Players need to stretch good but be ready and still warmed up at the same time. This means that they need to be in action while stretching. They can do the same stretching program for every muscle of their body but the difference would be to have each muscle stretched for 8-10 seconds twice. Stand up stretching with 2 or more repetitions to every muscle makes it automatically an active Stretching program which is called DYNAMIC STRETCHING.

STUDIES HAVE PROVED THAT PLAYERS WHO DO DYNAMIC STRETCHING FOR WARM UP ,DURING THE PRACTICE ARE QUICKER , JUMP HIGHER, HAVE MORE ENDURANCE AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST LESS INJURIES.

Remember you need to be always ready and warmed up while stretching and it takes no longer than 10 minutes.
